MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation expanded by 4.3% year-on-year during the first eight months of 2026. The total reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, compared to 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This growth represents an increase of roughly 1,546.5 GWh. Preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicates positive trends across multiple governorates. August’s production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July. Consequently, national electricity output remained above the 2025 figures.

Muscat registered the most significant rise in overall electricity generation, with a 204.8% increase compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% growth, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar experienced a 4.6% growth over the same timeframe. The data shows regional disparities in electricity growth, with several governorates reporting higher output during this period.
North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah exhibited a different trend, with combined electricity production dropping by 16.4% from the same months in 2025. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, maintaining roughly the same output as the previous year. Overall, most regions covered by the national data showed increases in electricity generation. Through August, Oman’s total electricity production remained elevated compared to the previous year. The figures include output from January to August 2026.
Net electricity output increases across Oman
Net electricity generation also saw growth during the January to August period, rising 4.6% to 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This measure accounts for purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the net growth with an increase of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar increased by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The total national gain was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
Combined net production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam produced 368.0 GWh, with an annual change rate of 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity production stayed above the levels recorded in 2025. The regional patterns largely mirrored the total output changes, with several governorates reporting higher net generation during the eight months.
Water output drops through August 2026
Oman’s water production decreased over the same eight-month span. Total output declined by 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from around 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water output fell 6.2% to approximately 128.07 million cubic metres, compared with about 136.57 million during the same period in 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with production reaching roughly 149.90 million cubic metres, down from about 155.19 million a year earlier.
Dhofar bucked this trend, recording a 3.4% increase in water production to approximately 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest figures reveal that electricity and water metrics are moving in opposite directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, overall water production declined despite the growth in Dhofar. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
