Casualties from Nepal-Tibet Floods Reach 919, Thousands Still Missing

    August 31, 2026

KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – The death toll resulting from flooding across Nepal and Tibet has now hit at least 919, with 4,793 individuals still unaccounted for. Following the disaster on August 26, Nepal has documented 903 fatalities and 4,247 people missing. Meanwhile, authorities in Tibet confirm 16 deaths and 546 missing persons in Gyirong County. Search teams continue to operate across devastated mountain regions, river valleys, and hydropower sites. Casualty figures have been updated as rescue efforts access previously unreachable areas and verify reports of missing persons.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reports that rescue teams have evacuated 10,451 individuals to safety. Of these, 252 are foreign nationals. Authorities list 592 foreigners among those still missing in Nepal. They also count 933 missing workers associated with hydropower projects along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli corridors. Officials have recorded 267 injuries, with 156 people having been discharged after treatment. Over 20,000 security personnel are actively supporting rescue, recovery, and relief efforts.

The flooding impacted the Bhote Koshi River region in Rasuwa District early on August 26. Rapid-moving waters damaged homes, roads, bridges, power stations, and other infrastructure. Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha suffered major damage as floodwaters traveled through connected river systems. The disaster also affected Gyirong County in Tibet near Nepal’s border. Rescue teams from both sides continue searching communities, valleys, and work sites. Difficult terrain and damaged roads have hindered access to several affected areas.

Rescue efforts remain focused on hydropower facilities

Rescue crews are prioritizing hydropower sites, where many workers remain unaccounted for. Nepal Army personnel collaborate with tunnel rescue specialists from India, China, and South Korea. Officials estimate that at least 90 individuals are trapped inside several hydropower tunnels. Debris, mud, and rocks obstruct access at multiple locations. Rescue teams utilize drilling equipment, ventilation systems, and heavy machinery during operations. Authorities are cross-referencing employment records with project operators and families of missing workers to verify identities.

Recovery teams are also working to identify bodies carried downstream during the flooding. Twenty-one hospitals currently hold unidentified remains, while officials compare records with family reports. In Chitwan, authorities have collected DNA samples and identification data before temporarily burying some bodies. They continue reconciling on-site reports to eliminate duplicates and confirm identities. Search efforts extend to remote settlements where damaged bridges and roads slow progress. Authorities caution that verified figures may change as identification processes continue.

Foreign nationals remain among those still unaccounted for

Foreign citizens constitute a significant portion of the missing persons list in Nepal and Tibet. Nepal reports 592 foreign nationals missing after the floods, while Tibetan authorities list 261 foreign citizens among the 546 individuals still unaccounted for in Gyirong County. The missing include citizens of Nepal, India, Latvia, the United States, and Britain. Officials are exchanging personal data and reviewing travel and border crossing records. Consular representatives are also aiding families seeking confirmation about relatives in the affected areas.

Nepal’s government remains committed to ongoing search, rescue, relief, and recovery operations across the disaster zone. Teams are delivering food, medical supplies, and emergency aid to impacted communities. Authorities continue monitoring rivers and assessing damage to transportation networks, homes, and power infrastructure. Thousands of people remain displaced or cut off from essential services. Officials emphasize reliance on verified casualty figures as agencies work to reconcile reports. The latest confirmed totals report 919 deaths and 4,793 missing persons across Nepal and Tibet.
