Belgian Study Shows Obesity Accounts for 8.2% of Deaths

    August 8, 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – The Belgian public health institute Sciensano released data revealing that in 2022, obesity was linked to 9,509 deaths in Belgium, making up 8.2 percent of the country’s total mortality for that year. This report represents the first systematic effort by public health experts in Belgium to quantify mortality directly associated with an excessively high body mass index across the population. Calculations show that weight-related health issues caused more than one death each hour nationwide and led to over 150,000 years of life lost across all age groups and demographics.

Obesity linked to 8.2% of Belgium deaths national study shows
Healthcare professionals evaluate chronic disease risk factors during clinical patient assessments.

This extensive epidemiological analysis explored underlying causes of death to assess how elevated body mass index contributes to chronic illnesses. The research identified cardiovascular issues as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer disease and other dementias, ranked second, contributing to 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases caused 1,171 deaths, with chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also playing significant roles.

The demographic breakdown shows that the risk of death related to overweight and obesity increases substantially with age. People aged 65 and older experienced the highest rates of weight-related health problems. Gender differences emerged as well, with men generally exhibiting higher mortality rates across most age groups. However, women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall mortality, a pattern attributed by epidemiologists to women’s longer average life expectancy.

Obesity Contributes to 8.2 Percent of Deaths in Belgium, Official Study Finds

Regional analysis across Belgium uncovered significant differences in mortality rates linked to excess weight. The southern region of Wallonia reported the highest death rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capital Region followed closely with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders showed the lowest impact, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Experts note these regional disparities reflect variations in socioeconomic conditions, diet, and healthcare accessibility across Belgium’s territories.

This data release coincides with ongoing policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which oversees national health initiatives. Public health authorities are using these findings to evaluate the long-term economic impact of chronic non-communicable diseases on the healthcare system. The research employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each condition, to establish baseline estimates that will inform future preventive strategies.

Using Comparative Risk Assessment to Measure Years of Life Lost

At the European level, organizations like the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate policy efforts regionally. The Belgian findings align with broader European Union objectives to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization’s guidelines advocate for comprehensive multi-sectoral approaches, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address these risks.

This evidence provides a solid foundation for health authorities aiming to decrease the prevalence of high body mass index across Western Europe. By quantifying mortality figures and years of life lost, policymakers can better allocate resources for screening, intervention programs, and lifestyle change initiatives. As regional health agencies analyze these results, national strategies are expected to prioritize early prevention to diminish the overall burden of chronic illnesses nationwide.

Spain Initiates Border Checks for Travelers Coming from Italy

    August 10, 2026

Spain has begun implementing temporary border controls for individuals arriving from Italy by air and sea. These measures started at midnight on Aug. 8 and are scheduled to remain in place until Sept. 7. Authorities are now inspecting travel documents and immigration papers on routes that typically do not have routine internal border checks. This decision follows Italy’s earlier move to reintroduce checks on certain passengers arriving from Spain. Travelers from Italy face temporary passport checks at Spanish airports and seaports. During the first day, Spain’s Interior Ministry reported inspecting 199 passengers traveling on 12 flights from Italy. The checks were carried out at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, and Valencia. The process includes verifying passports, nationality, and visa status where applicable. While authorities conduct these temporary controls, flights and maritime services between Spain and Italy continue to operate normally. Italy began its own temporary border controls on Aug. 1 following a significant migration influx into Ceuta from Morocco. Rome applied these checks to non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea, excluding Italian, Spanish, and other EU citizens from the targeted restrictions. Italy informed European authorities that its controls would run until Sept. 1, according to the current schedule.
