EU Begins to Enforce Labeling Requirements for AI-Generated Content

    August 4, 2026

Deepfakes and AI-generated media now face wider transparency duties under EU law. AI systems that interact directly with users must explicitly inform them that they are engaging with artificial intelligence. Providers of generative AI are also required to include machine-readable markers on synthetic text, audio, images, and videos. The legislation imposes separate disclosure duties on entities that publish or present synthetic materials, requiring clear identification of deepfake content. Notices must remain clear, accessible, and visible during the initial interaction or exposure.
