Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro with adaptive aperture and A20 Pro processor

    September 10, 2026

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple has launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, featuring enhancements in camera technology, battery performance, and processing capabilities. Both devices are powered by the new A20 Pro chip and incorporate a redesigned vapor chamber to ensure consistent performance. The company also introduced a smaller Dynamic Island and new camera controls aimed at professional users. Preorders begin on September 12, with sales starting September 18 across more than 65 countries and regions.

The most notable camera upgrade is a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with an adjustable aperture. Six internal blades enable the lens to shift between four different aperture settings. Users can manually modify the aperture, shutter speed, and white balance directly within the Camera app. A histogram display shows exposure levels as scenes are framed. The updated imaging system introduces new texture and grain controls for Photographic Styles, while videographers can add Cinematic effects after recording.

Apple also introduces Reference Image, a feature for those needing to verify whether a photograph has been altered. This opt-in capability records signed sensor data when a photo is taken in Reference mode. Private Cloud Compute then processes this data into a reference image for comparison within the Photos app. Apple plans to expand support for the SynthID standard via a software update later this year. Metadata embedded in images will also serve as a method to detect AI-generated or edited content.

Variable aperture offers greater control for photographers

The A20 Pro chip is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process and combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU. Apple claims the GPU performs up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro. The processor also features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with a total of 32 cores dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks. A new thermal design positions the processor closer to a larger vapor chamber, allowing the system to deliver up to 40% higher sustained performance compared to the previous generation.

Battery capacity has also been increased, especially on models that rely solely on eSIM. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours under the same testing conditions. Fast charging allows the Pro to reach 50% in approximately 15 minutes with compatible wired accessories. eSIM-only versions will be available in countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, along with several other regions outside the Middle East.

iOS 27 introduces Siri AI to the new Pro series

Running on iOS 27, the iPhone 18 Pro models support the latest Apple Intelligence features. Siri AI enters beta on September 14 for supported devices set to English. Apple plans to add support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October. Siri can draw on information from messages, emails, and photos when users request assistance. It can also interpret on-screen content and work seamlessly with the Camera app. Apple Intelligence combines processing on the device with Private Cloud Compute for supported cloud-based functions.

Both models will be available in burgundy, glacier, silver, and black, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299. Preorders will open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on September 12. The first wave of markets will see retail availability starting September 18, with an additional 20 countries and regions receiving the iPhone 18 Pro lineup from September 25.

NYC Detects Legionella DNA in Cooling Tower at Yankee Stadium

    September 16, 2026

The New York City Health Department found initial positive PCR results in 10 out of 24 cooling towers sampled across ZIP codes 10451 and 10456. Yankee Stadium is included in New York City’s South Bronx cooling tower investigation. The affected regions include parts of the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. Officials tested cooling towers during their investigation into potential environmental sources of the infections. PCR testing detects genetic material from Legionella bacteria but does not confirm whether the bacteria are alive. To determine bacterial viability, culture testing is necessary, a process that can take up to two weeks, according to officials.
