    Scientists Link Human Activities to Escalating Drought Severity in Europe

    London / RankWire.AI / – A comprehensive scientific analysis demonstrates that human actions are directly responsible for the severe drought conditions currently impacting Europe, conclusively showing climate change as a key factor in worsening the dryness across the continent. An international research consortium determined that extreme heat, rather than just low precipitation, is the primary cause behind the exceptionally dry environment. The region is experiencing dried-up rivers, strict water rationing, and devastating wildfires following a historic heatwave recorded in June. The new research indicates that the hotter climate today accelerates moisture loss from soils, lakes, and rivers, significantly increasing the likelihood of conditions becoming completely parched. Although spring rainfall was below average, it is the climate-driven heat that has intensified the drought to a much greater extent.

    Extreme heat reduces regional soil moisture and limits the water availability across the globe.

    The World Weather Attribution group published a study illustrating how rising temperatures are actively depleting natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily caused by low rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means that even in areas where rainfall patterns remain relatively stable, the risk of drought continues to increase. Scientists explain that for every one degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold roughly seven percent more water vapor. This greater capacity results in heightened evaporation from soil and plant life, affecting the entire landscape.

    By analyzing extensive weather data and employing sophisticated computer models, researchers estimated how the probability of these weather extremes has changed compared to a climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. The results show that soils in western Europe are five times more likely to become extremely dry than they would be in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, these moisture deficits are now 11 times more probable. The study also found that the levels of evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe were about 80 times more likely. Consequently, rainfall shortages that previously might not have triggered severe drought conditions now lead to much drier soils.

    Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich emphasized that the trend toward unusual soil drying already starts in spring before summer’s arrival. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst increases rapidly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of a relatively wet beginning to the year followed by extreme heat creates ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying primes the land for ignition, fueling severe fires across several nations. The findings confirm that climate change is intensifying drought across Europe, shifting traditional weather patterns into highly hazardous cycles.

    The agricultural sector endures unprecedented stress due to widespread loss of essential soil moisture. Drought conditions are exerting intense pressure on farmers, resulting in historic crop failures across multiple countries. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, representing a major disruption to regional food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortfalls, combined with ongoing global conflicts, have the potential to drive up food prices and disproportionately impact low-income households.

    The hydrological impacts compound the economic toll, with exceptionally low river levels disrupting vital cargo transportation routes. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways highlight the growing severity of the water scarcity crisis across Europe. Reduced river flows threaten energy production, especially in regions reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that recent June was the hottest recorded in western Europe. Many countries have already enacted emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve shrinking supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to climb, these drought conditions could become even more frequent. They stress that the current intense evaporative conditions occur at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate risks associated with present emissions levels. If global warming reaches 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative events could double. Without swift and robust efforts to cut emissions, experts warn that Europe is heading toward a future marked by increasingly scorching and dry summers.
