    Calls for Artist Representation in Australia’s AI Office Gain Momentum

    July 16, 2026

    CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Creators in Australia are advocating for a direct voice within the federal government’s newly established Office of AI. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the formation of this body on July 15 as a component of Australia’s national AI strategy. The office’s responsibilities include overseeing policies related to copyright, infrastructure, consumer safety, employment, education, and national security. Artists and rights organizations have expressed support for the initiative but are calling for formal mechanisms to influence decisions impacting creative industries.

    Australia AI office faces calls for artist representation
    Creators seek a formal voice as Australia develops national artificial intelligence rules.

    The Australian Recording Industry Association emphasized that musicians and other creators should play a role in shaping the office’s copyright policies. CEO Annabelle Herd highlighted that generative AI depends on sources such as music, literature, journalism, film, and visual arts. Australian law permits developers to utilize protected material with the consent of copyright holders. Herd also urged for clearer enforcement tools and streamlined processes for creators pursuing smaller claims.

    The government reiterated that authors, artists, and journalists must maintain control over how their work is used for AI training. It confirmed that existing copyright ownership will continue to be a key element of the new framework. However, no specific licensing system or payment model for protected content has been announced. Additionally, the government has not yet confirmed whether creators, publishers, or rights holders will have formal representation within the Office of AI.

    Creative Industry Calls for Formal Protections

    APRA AMCOS endorsed the new office and urged policymakers to implement licensing frameworks based on consent and remuneration. The organization represents songwriters, composers, and music publishers across Australia and New Zealand. CEO Dean Ormston also emphasized the importance of safeguarding Indigenous cultural and intellectual property. Earlier in July, artists, authors, and industry groups visited Canberra to defend existing copyright laws and advocate for direct engagement on AI policies.

    Anthropic stated that it respects the Australian government’s process and intends to comply with local requirements. The company has been considering a significant data centre investment in Australia linked to the development of its Claude AI model. Albanese noted that Australia offers skilled labor, abundant energy resources, and a stable legal environment conducive to tech investments. The government has not linked any specific data centre project to copyright access nor approved any exemptions for AI training purposes.

    National Framework to Regulate Data Centres

    Australia’s upcoming AI standards will impose mandatory requirements on large data centre operators. These requirements include supporting new electricity infrastructure, covering the costs of connecting to the grid, reducing power consumption during grid stress, and enhancing water efficiency. The National Cabinet will review the framework in August 2026, with legislation expected to be introduced in early 2027.

    The Office of AI will oversee the implementation process across federal agencies and collaborate with state and territory governments. Officials also aim to establish national consumer safety priorities building upon the recently launched AI Safety Institute. While opposition lawmakers have expressed concerns over increased regulation, the Greens have called for stronger legal protections. The government has yet to disclose the full composition of the office, its advisory procedures, or the formal channels for participation from the creative sector.”}
